What happens when the technology we use to run our lives is self-creating and self repairing?

The last leader of his dwindling race stands wrapped against the cold watching his breath fog the air. He sees the machines sustaining his and his people lives slowly shut down through old age. No policy he enacts, no god he tries to appease will stop this happening. The last person who understood what the lights that wink off one by one even meant died aeons ago. When will the reality of the situation sink in? He will go to his grave not understanding that the only thing he could have done was wait for the air to freeze. -Shane
